Giuseppe Verdi was born on 10 October 1813 at Le Roncole, a hamlet of Busseto, where his father ran an inn and a shop. Busseto gave him his patron Antonio Barezzi and, in 1868, a theatre named after him. Busseto is about 35 to 40 km north-west of Parma, an easy day by train or car.

How do you get from Parma to Busseto?
By train, changing at Fidenza, or by car: Busseto is about 35 to 40 km north-west of Parma. Verdi's birthplace is at Roncole, a few kilometres outside the town.

Can you visit Verdi's birthplace?
Yes: the Casa Natale di Giuseppe Verdi, at Via della Processione 1 in Roncole Verdi, opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:00 (last entry 12:30 and 17:30). It is closed on Mondays.
Tickets cost EUR 6, EUR 5 for ages 6 to 18, groups and families, and nothing under 5. Combined tickets with the Teatro Verdi, Casa Barezzi and the Renata Tebaldi museum cost EUR 15 to 22. The modest house was the inn and shop his father ran; the visit is a multimedia route with video tablets through the rooms.

A small theatre of 300 seats inside the Rocca Pallavicino, inaugurated on 15 August 1868 with Rigoletto and Un ballo in maschera. Verdi thought it too expensive and useless, gave 10,000 lire and kept a box, but never set foot inside.
Guided visits run Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 12:30 and 14:30 to 17:30, for EUR 6, or EUR 5 reduced, according to Busseto Live; it is closed on Mondays except special openings. It has two orders of boxes, a royal box and a gallery, and in 2026 it hosts Aida at the Festival Verdi.
What is Casa Barezzi?
The house of Antonio Barezzi, the merchant who became Verdi's patron and father-in-law. Verdi gave his first public performance in its salon in 1830, and since 2001 it has held a permanent exhibition on Verdi and the Barezzi family.

No, not in 2026. Villa Verdi, the house Verdi lived in for about 50 years at Sant'Agata, in the province of Piacenza, has been closed since 2022.
The Italian State took the villa over by expropriation in December 2024, and restoration is planned in four phases, but Il Post reported on 13 September 2026 that the works had not really started, apart from emergency repairs to the roof in 2025. You can see the gates and the outside only. Watch for special openings, such as FAI days.
Is Busseto part of the Festival Verdi 2026?
Yes: the Festival Verdi runs from 1 to 25 October 2026, and Aida is staged at the Teatro Verdi in Busseto, while Parma's Teatro Regio hosts Alzira, Nabucco and the Messa da Requiem.
